How to drape a saree

Here are the steps of basic and simple saree draping technique which will help you if you are a newcomer:
  • Tuck the plain upper end of saree into petticoat just at a right position from your navel. The whole length of saree will be on the left side and it should touch the floor.
  • Wrap a round of saree around yourself till the time it comes back to front again.
  • Make 5 to 6 pleats of equal size which can be approximately 5 inches wide and it should start at tucked-in the end, around the waist.
  • Gather all pleats in such a manner that their lower ends are just off the floor and pleats fall straight and even. Now neatly tuck in the pleats inside petticoat so that it ends at the little left of the navel. Safety pins can be used to control the plates and stop them from moving around.
  •  Make one more round of drape of remaining material from left to right and hold the top edge of the saree in front of you.
  •  After that raise your saree pallu on your left shoulder that its end comes at the level of your knees.
  •  The last part is the most creative and interesting part called the pallu setting. You can pin one end of pallu on the left shoulder and let the remaining part flow over your arm or you can again make pleats of the pallu and tuck them together on the left shoulder to have a neat and managed look.

There are many other famous ways of draping saree like Bengali style, Gujarati style, Maharashtran method, Tamilian version and much more.
